What topic areas are covered in the exam?
There are three main skills assessed in an AQA Functional Skills English Level 1 exam:
- Reading
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Writing composition
There are generally 26 marks available for reading, 12 marks available for spelling, punctuation and grammar, and 15 marks available for writing, so out of these skills reading is the most heavily assessed.
In the writing paper it is important to split your time appropriately. Question 2 will be around twice as long as question 1, so you are advised to spend 20 minutes on question 1 and 40 minutes on question 2.
Further to the reading and writing papers, students taking AQA Functional Skills English Level 1 will also be required to participate in a speaking, listening and communicating exam.
