Unit 3: Speaking and Listening

The Initial Assessment
Before you get started with your online English functional skills level 1 course, we recommend that you have a go at the initial assessment. This test will determine what level you are working at and suggest which course you should enrol on based on your results.
Your current level will be calculated using your initial level and information from how well you do on the tests to help you see what level you are working at. You will be able to see this increase as you improve through the course.
This helps providers and tutors to monitor their students’ progress, but it also helps students themselves to see if they are making the progress that they need to.
Subject Knowledge Assessment
Once you haven completed the initial assessment and enrolled on the suggested course, you are ready to get started!
The first step is to take the subject knowledge assessment. This will determine areas that you may be slightly weaker in and highlight them. Once completed, you will get a list of recommended topics which are topics that you should focus your revision on. We suggest that you still work through the whole course but go back over these suggested topics to make sure you’re really nailing them.
Booking your English Exam
Once you have completed all of the course, and are averaging 60% on the practice questions, topic tests and past papers, you should feel ready to sit your exam.
You can book your English Level 1 Functional Skills exam here, you can select a date and time that works best for you or book your exam without a fixed date and choose it later.

Most likely, our level 1 course is accepted by all of the major exam boards, including NCFE, City & Guilds, AQA, Open Awards, and more. As all of these exam boards follow the level 1 curriculum that the government sets, their main specifications and our own are very much alike, making our course apt for all.
As this is one of our most asked questions, unfortunately we are unable to give a specific answer as all learners require a different amount of time to prepare themselves to pass the exam. We recommend 50 hours of study time for every learner. Some learners need as little as 5 hours of revision but some may need even more than the recommended 50 hours! Feel free to spend as much time as you’d like studying and preparing for the exam as we also offer the self-study course which allows you to do everything in your own time.
For all learners we give a standard of 12 months of access to our level 1 course, however we can extend this amount of time if you request as you can keep it as long as you need it!

Sophie Garside has been tutoring my brother who has dyslexia, dysgraphia and English is his second language. I cannot tell how grateful we are for all Sophie`s support, help, patience and kindness. She is a real asset to the organisation. I wish all his tutor would be like her!
