Reading:

The English reading functional skills level 2 exam will challenge your analyse of different texts, for their presentational and linguistic features. As well as discussing Types or sources and navigating them. This section builds the knowledge needed for full reading comprehension.

Writing:

This section assesses your grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well as your sentence and paragraph structure. Your ability to write effectively and clearly will make a large part of the mark criteria and it’s something which is essential for passing this exam.

Speaking, listening and communication:

This section assesses your ability to effectively speak, listen and communicate. You will be assessed in a group with other learners via video call. Entry requirements:

This qualification has no entry requirements. All you will need is access to a computer, a stable internet and a quiet room. If you require reasonable adjustment then you will need to give a minimum of 20 working days notice, prior to your exam date.

Technical requirements:

The exam is sat remotely, so you will need the following equipment:

• Laptop/Desktop Microsoft Windows or Mac.
• A webcam and microphone. Usually, these are built into your laptop but be purchased cheaply if required.
• Wi-Fi connection, Minimum requirements 1 Mbit Upload, 10Mbit Download. (Hotspots, Mobile or otherwise are not allowed)
• Zoom desktop app needs to be downloaded and installed.

On the day of the exam:

There are three exams as part of the functional skills English qualification. The reading and writing exams are stat back to back on the same day and last 1 hour each. The SLC is typically sat on a different day, however, these can be on the same day if required to speed up the results.

When can I take the exam?

Exam sare available weekdays as well as Saturday. The full selection of dates can be seen in the calendar above where you can select the exam time and date you wish to sit your Level 2 English exam.

When will I get my certificate?

Excertificates are issued within 24 hours of your results, with paper certificates to follow after. Please be aware you must have paid off your payment plan fully before results can be released.

Qualifications

Pass Functional skills uses two different exam boards, Open awards and City & guilds. Both provide Ofqual accredited exams that are nationally recognised. We typically used Open awards as they provide the best experience for the student, however, if you would prefer another exam board, please let us know and will accommodate.

Why take a functional skills English Level 2?

The English level 2 qualification is equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 also known as a GCSE Pass. This means that this qualification can be used in place of a GCSE qualification in order to progress with a career or education.
