City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 2 Past Papers

City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 2 exams are split into two papers – one reading paper and one writing paper. The reading paper is based on a number of sources, all with a central theme. Questions on the reading paper consist of multiple choice forms and short written answers. The writing paper consists of two long-form writing questions of equal length, and contains assessment on spelling, punctuation and grammar. Before each writing question is a small amount of information on what you will be assessed on.

What topic areas are covered in the exam?

Candidates are advised to take 40 minutes on the first question and 40 minutes on the second question in paper 2, as they are of equal length and both worth 27 marks.

There are three major categories for assessment in City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 2:

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Spelling, punctuation and grammar

There are 30 marks available for reading, and 54 marks available for writing and spelling, punctuation and grammar. This means that all-round skills are required to succeed, as the sections are approximately equally weighted.

Further to the reading and writing papers, candidates will also be expected to participate in a speaking, listening and communication assessment.
