Edexcel Functional Skills English Level 1 Past Papers
The Edexcel (Pearson) Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification is split into two papers: a reading paper and a writing paper. The reading paper consists of questions pertaining to a variety of sources. Questions will ask you to state information on the source, infer information from sources, and identify and analyse the use of different linguistic features in the sources. In the writing exam, you will be set two different writing tasks of different lengths, both of which require a long answer. There will be extra marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar in the writing exam.

What topic areas are covered in the exam?
In the writing paper, the first question is worth 21 marks and the second question is worth 15 marks. You should spend around 35 minutes on question 1 and 25 minutes on question 2.
The Edexcel (Pearson) Functional Skills English Level 1 exam assesses three key skills:
- Reading
- Writing
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
There are 30 marks for reading, and 36 marks for writing and spelling, punctuation and grammar, so reading is the most heavily weighted, but a good skill level in all areas is still essential for success.
Subsequent to the reading and writing papers, learners taking Edexcel (Pearson) Functional Skills Level 1 will also take part in a speaking, listening and communication exam.
