The structure of assessment can vary between exam boards. All exam boards have two papers, one for reading and one for writing, where spelling, punctuation and grammar are assessed in the writing paper. The reading paper consists of questions pertaining to a number of sources that are presented to the learner at the start of the exam, and the writing paper consists of a small number of long questions, each requiring an extended response. The amount of time allowed for each paper, and the number of marks available for each paper, as well as how many marks are available for each skill, vary considerably between exam boards.
