Functional Skills English Entry Level 3 Exam
The English Functional Skills Entry Level 3 Online Exam that we provide at Pass Functional Skills is sat remotely, so you won’t need to travel anywhere to sit the exam. As long as you have a good internet connection and a computer with a camera and microphone, you are able to sit the exam in your own home.

What is Involved in the Functional Skills English Level 1 Exam?
Online Exam
The entry level 3 qualification that Pass Functional Skills provide is split into 3 separate exams: Reading, Writing, and SLC (Speaking, Listening and Communication). To achieve the qualification, you must pass each one of these tasks. All of these tasks will be testing your knowledge and application of the English Language.
Reading, Writing and SLC
Each of the sections that you need to complete vary in structure and time. The reading exam consists of reading and analysing sections of text, and lasts 45 minutes. The writing exam consists of writing your own, long-form answers to given scenarios, and lasts 50 minutes. The SLC task will consist of communicating with other learners to test your abilities to speak, listen and communicate, and will last around 30 minutes.
Invigilation
Before your exam starts, one of our Ofqual-approved invigilators will send you a link for you to be able to join the exam. They will be going through various checks to see if you are fit to do the exam, and help you with any tech issues. Once you are on the exam, they will be muted and will be monitoring you during your exam.
Entry requirements:
This qualification has no entry requirements. As long as you have access to a computer, a stable internet and a quiet room, they you are good to go.
Technical requirements:
The exam is sat remotely, so you will need the following equipment:
- Laptop/Desktop Microsoft Windows or Mac.
- A webcam and microphone. Usually, these are built into your laptop but be purchased cheaply if required.
- Wi-Fi connection, Minimum requirements 1 Mbit Upload, 10Mbit Download. (Hotspots, Mobile or otherwise are not allowed)
- Zoom desktop app needs to be downloaded and installed.
On the day of the exam:
There are three exams as part of the functional skills English qualification. The reading and writing exams are stat back to back on the same day and last around 45 minutes each. The SLC is typically sat on a different day, however, these can be on the same day if required to speed up the results.

Functional Skills English Entry Level 3 Online Exam Information
On the day of your exam, you will be sent an invitation to a video call with one of our trained invigilators. They will set you up on your exam and monitor you during your exam. They are also there if you have any issues with the exam.
If you have been requested to achieve an entry level 3 qualification in English by a course provider or employer, then yes, this qualification will be accepted, as it is Ofqual approved.
The pass mark for these exams can vary between each paper, but generally speaking, the pass mark is lower if the paper is harder, and vice versa.
Yes, you are able to take your level 2 or level 1 English straight after your entry level 3 if you wish. You do not need to have an entry level 3 qualification before sitting a level 1 or level 2 exam.
Yes its straight forward. When you email in to cancel your exam within 14 days of booking a full refund will be provided, minus a small administration fee for the work undertaken. The exceptions to this rule are:Â
- If you have taken the exam during this time.
- You have purchased the exam with a date that is within 2 weeks. This is considered a fast track booking which means we pay for the exam and invigilation space straight after booking is made to ensure we can secure the exam timeslot. Therefore no refunds can be provided for these exams.
Yes, you can take the English functional skills level 2 exam here and the English functional skills level 1 exam.
We offer fast track functional skills results so from the day you complete your exam, results are usually delivered within 2 weeks, this can sometimes be sooner. Your results will arrive via email, and if successful, a certificate will follow shortly after in the post.
- Functional skills writing entry level 3 exam – You will need to write long-form answers to given scenarios. It lasts 45 minutes.
- Functional skills English reading entry level 3 exam – You will have to read and analyse sections of text. This exam is 50 minutes long.
- Functional skills speaking and listening entry level 3 exam – In this exam you will discuss topics with other learners, it will test your abilities to speak, listen and communicate. This will last around half an hour.
