What is Functional Skills Level 1?

Functional Skills Level 1 is a qualification demonstrating the ability to apply a basic understanding of maths and English in real-life situations. What is level 1 functional skills equivalent to? Functional Skills level 1 is equivalent to a grade D or E at GCSE, but are a stepping stone for students to move onto the functional skills level 2.

What is in the Functional Skills Level 1 Exams?

Functional Skills English Level 1

Reading: This is a 60-minute paper that requires you to complete short answer questions on a number of texts provided in the exam. You will need to demonstrate you can identify the key points within texts and recognise vocabulary associated with specific types and purposes of texts.

Writing: This is a 60-minute paper requiring you to demonstrate your writing skills in different contexts and texts with specific purposes determined by the scenario in the paper. You will need to communicate your opinions clearly, with a structure relevant to the task and with accurate spelling and grammar.

Speaking listening and communication: This is a group exam where you will discuss a pre-determined topic with other learners. It lasts approximately 60 minutes and requires you to extract relevant information from key points discussed, ask and respond effectively to questions and communicate opinions clearly. Remember this is an exam focusing on your communication skills, not your level of knowledge on the chosen topic.

 

Functional Skills Maths Level 1

This is a 2-hour exam comprising of a non-calculator and calculator section. The content of this exam can be broken up into 3 main topics:

Using numbers and the number system- use and calculate with fractions decimals and percentages, identify compare and extend numerical and spatial patterns, calculate simple interest, order and compare whole numbers, fractions, ratios and decimals, and count in steps of various sizes.

Using common measures, shape and space- this includes using calculations with common measures such as money and time, drawing and describing 2D and 3D shapes, and working out the relationship between common units of measurement to define quantities.

Handle information and data- select, construct and interpret statistical diagrams, select and use methods and forms to present outcomes, extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs, interpret probabilities, recognise and use the probability scale, apply simple statistics and features of charts to compare sets of data.

It can vary from exam to exam, and between exam boards, but is generally around 60%. If you are achieving over 60% consistently on functional skills maths and English tests and mock exams, then you should be in a good position to pass your exam.

How long does it take to get exam results?

Taking your exam for functional skills level 1 online means that there is a faster results turnaround than sitting in person. You will get your exam results within as little as 1 week of sitting the exam. However, results can take up to a maximum of 10 working days.

Is level 1 maths equivalent to a GCSE?

A level 1 functional skills qualification in maths isn’t equivalent to a GCSE but a level is. As the equivalent GCSE grade to a level 1 is a 2/3 it is just below a pass.

Is an online functional skills maths level 1 widely accepted?
