As all exam boards follow the government-set Level 1 curriculum, their core specifications are very similar, which makes our course suitable for all of them.
This is one of our most frequently asked questions. Unfortunately, there is no single answer, as the amount of time needed to prepare varies from learner to learner. We generally recommend around 50 hours of study. Some learners may feel ready after as little as five hours of revision, while others may need more than the recommended 50 hours.
With our self-study course option, you are free to spend as much time as you need preparing for the exam, allowing you to study at your own pace and build confidence before booking.

Some sections of the Level 1 English course are available for free. However, to give yourself the best chance of improvement and access the most useful resources, we strongly recommend upgrading to the full course, as this can significantly increase your chances of passing.
- Functional skills English reading level 1 exam – 1 hour – You will be given sections of text that you will then have to read and analyse.
- Functional skills English level 1 writing exam – 1 hour – There will be a series of scenarios to which you have to give long-form answers to.
