What topic areas are covered in the exam?
Three skill areas are assessed by the Open Awards Functional Skills English Level 1 exam:
- Reading
- Writing
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
Reading is worth 30 marks, writing is worth 36 marks and spelling, punctuation and grammar is worth 24 marks. Since each skill is close to equally weighted, it is very important to have a good grasp of all of them when taking the exam.
There are two questions in the writing paper, both worth 30 marks, so candidates are advised to spend 30 minutes on each of them.
Candidates taking the Open Awards Functional Skills English Level 1 exam will also take a speaking, listening and communication assessment, which will form a significant amount of their grade.
