What Counts as a National 5 Maths Equivalent?

If you’re living outside Scotland, or if you’re applying for courses or jobs in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you might be asked for a qualification that’s the equivalent of National 5 Maths.

The two most commonly accepted equivalents are:

• GCSE Maths (usually at grade 4 or C and above)
• Functional Skills Maths Level 2

Both of these qualifications are widely recognised and accepted by employers, colleges, and universities across the UK. So if someone asks for a National 5 Maths equivalent, either of these will usually do the job.

Resitting National 5 Maths or Equivalent

Need to resit National 5 Maths or something similar? You’ve got options. While you can retake the original Scottish qualification, many people choose to go for the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 course or GCSE route instead, especially if they’re no longer in school.

Functional Skills is often faster to complete and can be taken online with remote invigilation. It’s a great alternative if you’re looking for a more flexible approach. If you still prefer the more traditional academic path, a GCSE resit might be right for you.
