Functional Skills: Density
DensityÂ
Density measures the relationship between the mass and volume of an object.
The units used for density are usually kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m) or grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm).

Density, Mass and Volume are related by the following equations:
Density = Mass Volume
Mass = Density Volume
Volume = Mass Density
Note:
You may see weight being used instead of mass – just take them as meaning the same thing.

Example 1:Â Calculating Density
An object has a mass of g and a volume of cm.
Calculate the object’s density to decimal places.

Example 2: Calculating Mass
A block of wood has a volume of cm and a density of g/cm.
Calculate the mass of the the block of wood.

Example 3: Calculating VolumeÂ
A block of gold has a density of g/cm and a mass of g.
Calculate the volume of the gold block to decimal place.

Functional Skills: Density Example Questions
Question 1:Â A kg bottle of tomato ketchup has a volume of cm. Calculate the density of the ketchup in g/cm to decimal places.

First convert kg into grams: g
Density = Mass Volume
Density of ketchup = g/cm to decimal places.
Question 2:Â A cube with side lengths of cm has a density of g/cm. Calculate the mass of the cube in kg.
[3 marks]
First we need to work out the volume of the cube: cm
Mass = Density Volume
Mass of cube = g = kg
Question 3:Â A block of silver has a density of g/cm and a mass of g. Calculate the volume of the block of silver.
[2 marks]
Volume = Mass Density
Volume of the block of silver = cm
