Languages
Speaking a language is an excellent skill to have, and it’s even better if you have a qualification to prove your proficiency. Being able to read, write, understand, and speak several languages, or knowing one at GCSE standard, is a great skill to have, both in your personal life and in the workplace. Some employers are increasingly seeking speakers of multiple languages, and so a GCSE in a second language will increase your employability. It is an example of a transferable skill – one which can be an asset to you in different jobs and contexts. Multilingualism also develops your cultural competence and allows you to build deeper connections both at work and at home. Learning a language can help improve your memory, creativity, and cultivate better problem-solving, and some research suggests that logical decision making is aided by working through the problem in a non-native language.
Some languages are easily taken as a GCSE subject, whereas others are less commonly offered. Additional bookings to take your GCSEs in a foreign language with Edexcel IGCSE exam board are open below:
GCSE Arabic Exam
GCSE Chinese Exam
GCSE French Exam
GCSE Spanish Exam
Finance, Maths, and Science
Careers in finance are some of the most well-paid jobs on offer. GCSEs which relate to finance and accounting are a great asset for your CV if you are planning to go down this route. These qualifications help you to develop skills useful in these jobs in particular, as well as soft skills (strengths that are useful in lots of different contexts) such as a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and decision making.
Similarly, GCSEs in science and maths subjects are great for those looking at careers in the STEM sector. Applicants who have deepened their maths knowledge through a Further Maths GCSE are likely to have an advantage when it comes to university applications – the study will also be interesting for those who enjoy and excel at maths. Science GCSEs with a focus on human biology will help you establish the background you need for advancement in sectors such as health and social care.

Culture and Life Skills
There are few jobs in the current career landscape where technology is not relied upon in some shape or form, and so knowing how to (and proving that you can) operate computers for a multitude of different purposes is a fantastic skill to have. But there is more to most jobs than just technology. In the vast majority of jobs, you will need to communicate respectfully and effectively with other people. In this way it is important to know about how culture impacts the workforce and the world at large. A global citizenship qualification shows that you have a solid knowledge and awareness of the world around you, including politics and both local and global communities, as well as that you can employ critical thinking to these topics. It also shows that you are an active member of society and a well-rounded individual who takes interest in other people – something that employers will look out for.
If you are looking to expand your world view further, or focusing on your own faith, you might consider taking Islamic Studies at GCSE level. It is a great foundation for further study at A Level, and gives students a deep understanding of Islamic beliefs, practices, and history. This qualification can also help you develop your own connection to Islam.
