Unit 1: Reading
Students improve reading comprehension with techniques like scanning, skimming, and detailed reading. They learn to analyse texts deeply and understand the purpose of organizational features such as headings and bullet points, which aid in navigating and interpreting the text.
Unit 2: Writing
This unit refines writing skills by focusing on English grammar, including punctuation, spelling, and syntax. Students learn to avoid common errors and produce clear, coherent written work. The unit covers various writing types, enabling students to apply their skills in different contexts.
Unit 3: Speaking and Listening
This unit enhances oral communication skills through activities in presenting, narrating, and argumentation. Students learn to structure their speech, engage audiences, and use persuasive techniques, gaining confidence in both formal and informal speaking situations.
Initial Assessment Diagnostic Test
Before starting the online functional skills level 2 English course, you can take a free bespoke, initial assessment diagnostic. This assessment accurately determines the level you are currently working at, and suggests a course for you to be enrolled on after completing it.

The course is designed to make sure students can easily navigate around it, making it as easy as possible for students to use it and keep track of their progress. Students can do this via the dashboard section, which shows a student’s course completion, average scores, and latest results, allowing you to quickly revisit recent topics you have attempted.
You can also keep track of your progress using the current level, as previously mentioned, which is displayed at the top of the course.

The course is split into 3 main sections, containing 35 topics in total, covering everything from the curriculum. Each topic contains 3 elements to work through; revision, practice questions, and topic tests.
The revision sections consist of tutorial videos by an expert tutor. We recommend watching these first to get an understanding of the course content. After that, have a go at the practice questions for that topic. The practice questions contain 5 quickfire style multiple choice questions, testing a students understanding of what they learned in the revision sections. Finally, try the topic tests. These consist of exam style questions, specifically for that topic. All questions contain instant feedback written solutions, explaining how to get to the correct answer. In each section, the system keeps track of your scores and progress!
