Practise Extracting Information

A good way to practise your ability to extract relevant information is to…

  1. Listen to the news or a podcast.
  2. From the heading/title, decide one thing you want to find out by the end of it.
  3. Listen and try to focus specifically on finding that information.
  4. If you don’t have the information by the end, listen to it again to check that you haven’t missed it.
  5. Sometimes the information you wanted to find out may not even be in the audio at all!
  6. Think of some possible questions that you could ask, based on what you have learnt.

Becoming familiar with this technique is important – practising will help you to develop your listening skills.
