Linking words

There are three main uses for linking words when writing texts, let’s take a look at them now!

1.

Linking words, or connectives, join phrases together!

The main connectives for this are:

  • And
  • But

For Example:

Jack was cooking in the kitchen and Jill was doing yoga.

The man asked the woman why she was running, but she just screamed at him.

2.

Linking words can also be used to express a reason or to introduce something which is happening at the same time, before or later.

The main connectives for this are:

  • Because
  • While
  • If
  • After
  • So

For Example:

He went to the shops because he wanted to buy a sandwich and some crisps.

Harrison Ray danced while he listened to the song.

The woman would have bought the car if she had enough money. He started going to the library after he failed his exam.

The goalkeeper injured his shoulder so he decided to retire.

3.

Linking words can also introduce a sequence of events.

Some common linking words for this are:

  • Firstly
  • Next
  • Finally

For Example:

Firstly, I went to my friend’s house. Next, we went to the park.  Finally, we came home and watched TV.

Why use linking words?

Linking words and connectives will make your writing more developed, meaning that you will pick up more marks in the exam!

Reading a text with linking words is also far more interesting than reading one without connectives!

Which of the following do you think is better?

1. I like maths. I enjoy going to lessons. I like English too. I’m good at it. In my own time, I talk to my friends. I play video games at the same time. I read books before I go to bed.

2. I like maths so I enjoy going to lessons. In addition, I like English because I’m good at it. In my own time, I talk to my friends while I play video games. Finally, I read books before go to bed.

Notice how the second example flows much more smoothly than the first – it is easier to read and also it doesn’t seem as plain and boring as the first!

Note:

Don’t use too many linking words – full stops can be used to break up long and hard to follow sentences!
