NOCN Functional Skills English Level 1 Past Papers
The NOCN Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification is separated into three parts, a reading exam, a writing exam and a speaking and listening assessment. Similarly to the Level 2 qualification, the reading paper consists of questions relating to three different texts. Questions will ask you to state information on the source, infer information from sources, and identify and analyse the use of different linguistic features in the sources. The writing exam, contains two tasks of equal length, which will required you to write a longer form answer based on the given instructions. There will be extra marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar in the writing exam.

What topic areas are covered in the exam?
The writing exam is split into two tasks, both worth 27 marks each. It is advised that candidates split their time equally between the two tasks, making sure to leave enough time at the end for checking your work.
Out of the 54 marks available in the exam, 30 marks is awarded for composition of your answer and 24 marks is awarded for spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The reading exam is marked out of 32 marks, with questions referring to three different texts, which you are expected to read at the start of the exam. Spelling, punctuation and grammar is not taken into account when the reading paper is marked.
Candidates for NOCN Functional Skills English Level 1 will also be expected to sit a speaking, listening and communicating exam.
