City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 1 Past Papers
City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 1 exams are split into two papers – a reading paper and a writing paper. In the reading paper, candidates are presented with a number of sources all based on a central theme, and are assessed on their ability to obtain information from those sources. Some questions are multiple choice, while others require short written responses. In the writing paper, candidates are presented with two questions of equal length, both of which require a substantial written answer.

What topic areas are covered in the exam?
City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 1 assesses three skills:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking, listening and communicating
There are 30 marks available for reading, and 54 marks available for writing and spelling, punctuation and grammar, so it is important to have a broad base of skills covering all three areas in order to achieve success in this exam.
Since both questions are of equal length in the writing paper, candidates are advised to take 40 minutes for each question.
Alongside the reading and writing papers, a City and Guilds Functional Skills English Level 1 exam also includes a speaking, listening and communication component, for which candidates will be submitted for controlled assessment.
