Functional Skills: Lists Revision
Lists
Lists are an efficient way of showing multiple pieces of information at once. We might refer to information as data.
Identifying Various Types of Lists
Data can be listed in words, numbers or both.
So, for example, in a shopping list, you might see a list of words, i.e.
- Bread
- Milk
- Chicken
In a survey or other data setting, you might see a list of numbers, i.e.
- 8.7/10
- 7.6/10
- 7.9/10
And in a list of products at a shop, you might see a combination of both, i.e.
- Plain fudge – £3.00
- Chocolate fudge – £4.00
- Honeycomb fudge – £5.00

Example 1: Navigating Lists
Here’s a price list of fruits at grocery.
- Apples – 30 p per apple
- Bananas – 50 p per banana
- Mangoes – 70 p per mango
- Oranges – 45 p per orange
a) What is the price of a mango?
b) How much would it cost to buy a banana and an orange?
[3 marks]
a) Look down the list until you find mangoes. Read across to find the price: 70 p.
b) Look down the list until you find bananas and oranges. Read across to find both prices: 50 p and 45 p.
Add them together to get 50 p + 45 p = \boldsymbol{95} p
Example 2: Navigating Lists
Here’s a list of the heights of 5 friends.
- James – 1.80 m
- Danielle – 1.67 m
- Raj – 1.88 m
- Amy – 1.75 m
- Evan – 1.74 m
a) How tall is Amy?
b) Who is the tallest and who is the shortest?
[3 marks]
a) Look down the list until you find Amy. Read across to find the price: 1.75 m.
b) Look down the list to find the highest number: 1.88 m – Raj.
Look down the list to find the smallest number: 1.67 m – Danielle.
Therefore, Danielle is the shortest and Raj is the tallest.
