Maths Functional Skills Diagnostic Assessments

We have two types of diagnostics tests, the initial assessment and the subject knowledge assessment. Find out more about each of these below.

It is an ESFA requirement to carry out an assessment of current level for those apprentices who do not have evidence of prior attainment of level 2 maths and English qualifications. These assessments must be carried out using tools based on the national literacy and numeracy standards and core curriculum, as stated by the ESFA funding rules. The Pass Functional Skills diagnostics tests help training providers to meet these requirements without incurring any cost.

Initial Assessment

Our initial assessment is unlike any other maths diagnostic assessment, helping provide you with a more accurate insight into the level a learner is currently working at. This is done by asking questions of varying difficulties across all topics, each question has it’s own weighting based on difficulty and other factors. The number of correct answers and their weighting is then used to calculate a learners’ initial level. The value of your initial level allows you to judge whether level 1 or level 2 would be more suitable. Subsequently, a course will be suggested based on how the number of marks achieved.

Current Level

As learners work through the course, their current level will change according to how well they are doing on the practice questions and topic tests. Our current level metric gives learners an idea of the level they are working at. Current level is calculated using scores from practice questions and topic tests, while taking into account the difficulty of each question. Once a learners’ current level is above 2.5, they should be ready to sit their level 2 exam.

Subject Knowledge Assessment

As well as the initial assessment, we also provide a subject knowledge assessment. This diagnostic test assesses learners across the whole course, identifying areas for improvement. Following completion of the subject knowledge assessment, learners are given a list of recommended topics. These are areas that we suggest the learner focuses on while revising. Completing these topics within the course, should prepare a learner for their exam.
