What are functional skills?

Functional skills are qualifications that demonstrate your proficiency in Maths and English – two of the most important subjects in the UK. Skills in these subjects are needed for employment, education, and everyday life. Functional skills enable learners to communicate effectively, make informed decisions and solve problems. Level 2 functional skills qualifications are equivalent to grade 4/C GCSEs.

Maths Functional Skills

The Functional Skills Maths Level 2 qualification will teach you a range of topics. The qualification is designed to develop your real life numeracy skills and problem-solving abilities. The main three areas of the qualification are:

• Using Numbers: Understanding and using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages and conducting basic calculations.
• Understanding Measure, Shape and Space: Working with money, measurements, geometric shapes, and spatial awareness.
• Handling Information and Data: Collecting, analysing, and interpreting data using graphs, charts, and tables, and calculating averages.

The maths qualification has a focus on applying maths to practical tasks, such as budgeting and planning travel.

English Functional Skills

Functional Skills English Level 2 aims to improve your communication skills in the English language, both written and verbal. The curriculum focuses on three main areas:

• Reading: Understanding and interpreting a variety of written texts, from articles to instructions, and navigating sources.
• Writing: Producing clear written text for things like emails, reports, and essays, with a focus on grammar, punctuation and spelling.
• Speaking, Listening, and Communication: Engaging in discussions and presentations, and learning how to listen effectively.

The English qualification has a focus on building your confidence in using English, from professional settings to everyday interactions.
