Properties of 3D Shapes

All 3D shapes have a countable number of edges, corners and faces – these faces can be flat or curved.

There are three standard 3D shapes to know:

  • Cube
    • 6 identical faces
    • 8 corners
    • 12 edges
    • All angles at the corners are right angles
  • Cuboid
    • 6 faces, which can either be squares or rectangles
    • 8 corners
    • 12 edges
    • All angles at the corners are right angles
  • Cylinder
    • 2 flat sides which are circular
    • 1 curved side
    • 2 edges
    • No corners

  • Three faces (Two circular, One curved)
  • Two edges
  • No corners

In the same way to comparing a square to a rectangle, a cube is a specific type of cuboid where all faces and edge lengths are the same. A cuboid can have longer or shorter side lengths.
