City and Guilds Functional Skills English Entry Level 1, 2, 3 Past Papers

The City and Guilds Functional Skills English Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 exams consist of two sections, Reading and Writing. Each paper is given a theme or topic to revolve around, but your knowledge will be tested on your English ability, rather than your knowledge on the subject. The Reading section will assess your ability to interpret texts, while the Writing exam will test your spelling, punctuation and grammar, alongside general use of literary techniques. There will also be a spelling task embedded within the Writing paper – these have been omitted from the site, but would take place under exam conditions.

The allocation of time and marks in exams is as below:

  • Entry Level 1:
    • Reading – 30 minutes, 10 marks
    • Writing – 25 minutes, 20 marks (+ 10 marks)
  • Entry Level 2:
    • Reading – 40 minutes, 14 marks
    • Writing – 30 minutes, 20 marks (+ 10 marks)
  • Entry Level 3:
    • Reading – 45 minutes, 16 marks
    • Writing – 40 minutes, 30 marks (+ 10 marks)

Reading papers permit the use of a dictionary, but writing papers do not.
