What topic areas are covered in the exam?
Three skills are assessed in the Highfield Qualifications Functional Skills English Level 1 exam.
- Reading
- Writing
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
There are 20 marks available for reading, 28 marks available for writing, and 20 marks available for spelling, punctuation and grammar. However, the reading marks are scaled up considerably to make the reading paper worth a third of the qualification. All three skills are essential to performing well on the exam.
Your score in each paper will be scaled such that each paper is worth a third of your grade. Both questions in paper 2 are worth 24 marks, so candidates are encouraged to spend around 30 minutes on each.
One third of the qualification comes from a speaking, listening and communication controlled assessment that candidates are required to take part in.
